Maintaining a top 5 league position

For as long as Fabs stays on form and injury free, looking at our next 4 fixtures, becoming set piece dangerous, Benrahma still too impress and the return of Antonio, things are looking good. Winning when on backfoot is a rarity in the past but becoming common. If individual players keep improving as they are and the team spirit is obviously good, I feel confident we will be competing in and around the top 5 for a while and turn out good underdogs and underestimated by the usual teams that walked over us in the past.

Liverpool aside, with Villa, Fulham and Sheff United coming up, with some luck and a dip in form from Tottenham or Everton, we are looking good to keep amongst the top 6.

Wonder why Sullivan said Diangana sale would be fully reinvested in players. Ok he could say it was but in part on past fees but misleading at best.
Would be great to go back thru last 10 years. I recall them saying Obiang would be replaced and he wasn’t. Seems GSB guilty of 3 things more than anything else... appalling transfer dealings , financial mismanagement and lying about it or at least misleading fans ?

Sir Alf - transfer money in, gone on servicing money out, still owed from previous transfer windows. At May 2019, we owed £44 million due by May 2020 and ANOTHER £43 million there after (by comparison we were due £17 million in, for sales at May 19)
To say nothing of the down turn in income, caused by covid restrictions.

No one seems to be able to work out where the sales from the last window have gone? We were told it would all be reinvested in players. It was also rumoured that we got a lot of the Diangana fee up front ? Coufal was cheap and his fee installment will be low and Benrahma is 4.5 million loan? Where’s the other £20+ million gone ? Or is my abacus malfunctioning again ?

Be shocked if there is a lot of spending by all the teams in January. With the table so packed together, no one is going to let a player go to a rival. Unless it’s a ridiculous price. As for us. Maybe King on deadline day. If he is still available.?

Can't remember a top half of the table, so congested, this far into a season.
About a third of the season gone and the top ten separated by 6 points.

Antonio won't play this year.
There is still a belief that Haller can make it.
Virtually every team in the league wants a striker, buying someone that Moyes can be decisive on fast with limited funds when there is no 'need' generally signals to it not happening.
Yes, we'd all love for a young hungry injury free Antonio mark 2 to arrive from some half decent team in Italy or the Championship. But ironically, and sadly, there'd be more chance of that happening if we were 16th rather than 6th.
but never say never.

I like this team we have, Moyes has done brilliantly in rejuvenating existing players and bringing in a few new ones who have improved us a lot. Top half finish would be good.

If like Balbuena, the Monster Diop can return to form and Antonio returns, it will feel like 2 new players. Even a decent game from Haller makes a difference.
I think the chequebook is irrelevant, not with signings like Soucek and Bowen. Along with past big fuck up spending.
The team seems to have sussed that closing down players and being more aggressive , running more for each other, gives them the opportunity to play nice football or gritty, yet recently we look a tough intimidating unit.
****When posted top 5 , I meant floating around 5th 6th.
The Poll has 31% relegation with only 4% 5th to 7th.
I could not stand Moyes. But I think with shrewd additions and players competing well for places, 7th is not beyond the realms of our usual top 10 wishes that always end closer to relegation.

Watching the behind the scenes of the Leeds game with the ground level camera I've noticed the sharpness and running off the ball that we are doing . Impressive.

On my Xmas present list: Haller to start playing like a £45,000 forward. One thousandth of the price we paid for him - well it's a start.

Not sure we are that strong in depth, Irons.
What has changed is that players seem to be happy in a system, are fitter, and seem to be playing for one another.
That - rather than wheeling our a ready-made replacements - has meant we have maintained form.

However we have drunkenly stumbled into it, we are in a better position depth-wise than we have been in the relatively recent past.
Can you imagine losing Arnautovic in the run to avoid relegation last time Moyes was here. Antonio was as important in our early play, we lost him and as much as Haller needs to be better, we won the games we should have without the former.

We are currently twelve points above third from bottom thus comfortably clear of that scrap.
At the same time we are currently five points from top position and we have a positive goal difference.
Whilst being realistic about our proper place in the EPL pecking order let’s not be too “Sir Alf” about how we are doing.
